How to Identify Carpenter Bees:

Large, shiny black abdomen (unlike fuzzy bumblebees)
Hover near wooden surfaces like fascia boards, fences, or eaves
Round, smooth holes in wood (typically ½ inch wide)
Yellowish staining from pollen or droppings around nest entrances
